Three runners. One simple idea — make races we'd want to run. Over a decade later, that idea is still what holds RaceBase together.
RaceBase was started in 2014 by three friends who'd run almost every race in Hong Kong — and felt there was room for events that took the runner's experience seriously. Not just timing chips and t-shirts. The full thing. Course design, safety, community, story, the way a finish line feels.
Today we still run every kilometre of every course we put on. We still pick up litter on recces. We still believe that if it isn't a race we'd want to run, it isn't a race worth making.
Steve heads up RaceBase day-to-day — directing The 9 Dragons, leading the digital and registration platform work, and most of the bits in between. Hong Kong-based, multilingual, and at his happiest somewhere on the Kowloon ridgeline before sunrise.
He started 9 Dragons because he wanted a race that didn't pretend Hong Kong's mountains were easier than they are.
Sydney-born runner and triathlete. Father of two. Michael brings the calm hand that every race weekend needs — across logistics, operations, and making sure the right people are in the right places when the gun goes.
Off the course, you'll find him travelling, cooking properly, and being slightly too serious about wine.
Nic was one of the three of us who started RaceBase in 2014. He saw what running could be when it was built around people, story, and place — and he made everyone around him a little braver for being in his orbit.
Every finish line we set is a little bit his. Every recce we run, every dawn on the ridgeline, every runner who finds something they didn't know they had — that's him too.
